SPEAR celebrates International Men's Day: making a positive difference in men's lives

This International Men’s Day, we are highlighting the importance of supporting men experiencing homelessness and the positive impact our services have on their lives. With approximately 81% of our clients being male, we recognize the unique challenges they face and the transformative power of targeted support.

Many of our male service users come from backgrounds marked by trauma, including unstable childhoods, social exclusion, crime and violence as either victim or perpetrator and poor mental health. We’re committed to addressing these issues and helping men build resilience and social skills.

Our Health and Wellbeing events play a crucial role in this process. Dean Ruske, SPEAR’s Homeless Health Link Event Coordinator, explains:

“Our events bring services directly to clients, breaking down barriers to access. We’ve seen men engage with support services for the first time ever at these events. It’s about creating a safe space where they can take those first steps towards improving their wellbeing.”

Success stories demonstrate the positive changes possible when men receive the right support. We work with men who struggled with alcohol dependency and anger issues who have found purpose through volunteering and therapy. Others have overcome homelessness and mental health issues and are now regular volunteers at our events, giving back to the community that supported them.

This International Men’s Day, we celebrate these achievements and reaffirm our commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of men experiencing homelessness. Through our work to end homelessness in South West London we will continue to help more men find stability, improve their wellbeing, and rebuild their lives.
