The role
As a Hostel Night Worker, you will be part of a professional and experienced team and will be responsible and accountable for the provision of hostel-based services and the effective co-ordination of support to rough sleepers with complex needs.
This role will require you to work on a rota system. Shifts are 9:45 pm to 8:15 am, three days per week and will include weekends.
Main role and responsibilities:
- Support an effective needs-led service for Hostel residents, in line with SPEAR’s policies and procedures
- Maintain accurate records of work undertaken (in the log book, client file notes and IT based forms of communication as appropriate)
- Share information with the Hostel team in line with SPEAR’s confidentiality policy
- Ensure that all Hostel residents are treated with respect, contribute to a positive atmosphere within the Hostel, and promote uptake of meaningful activity as appropriate
- Support key workers by talking to clients who are more likely to be seen at night, but do not undertake specific pieces of key work with SPEAR Hostel residents or otherwise offer any advice relating to resettlement or benefits
- Maintain a safe and appropriate physical environment for staff and service users, in conjunction with the Landlords and Health and Safety Representatives
- Ensure the hostel is secure by regular patrols – monitor external doors, access in and out of the building, and carry out checks on communal areas and resident rooms where necessary
- Deal with any disputes or emergencies, diffuse difficult or dangerous situations and summon assistance
when necessary - Deal with telephone and general enquiries, including liaising with On Call managers where appropriate
- Participate in staff management and support systems in line with SPEAR’s policies and procedures, including induction and supervision and training. This may involve an occasional requirement to work within daytime hours.
- Contribute to regular team meetings and handovers
- Represent SPEAR appropriately at all times, and work professionally with external agencies
- Liaise and work with all internal stakeholders to deliver an effective SPEAR wide service
About you
To be considered for the role of Hostel Night Worker, you will have:
- Relevant experience, either paid or voluntary, working with homeless people or rough sleepers
- An understanding of the causes of, and pathways out of, homelessness
- Experience of assessment and support systems for vulnerable people, including key working
- The ability to work with clients who may display challenging behaviour and that have complex needs
- Basic knowledge of appropriate legislation, including welfare benefits and housing law
- Basic knowledge of health and safety requirements in the workplace
- Solid IT skills
- The ability to represent SPEAR appropriately at all times, and work professionally with external agencies
- An understanding of confidentiality needs within the organisation and the ability to apply them
- The ability to manage your time in a busy and pressurised environment
